Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and sub-festivals open submissions

Logo

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF), Youth and Children’s Film Festival Just Film
and PÖFF Shorts have opened submissions for the 2018 edition.

The 22nd edition of PÖFF, running from November 16th to December 2nd, will see a major change in one of the three competition programmes of the festival. The former Estonian Film Competition that used to be judged by the same jury as the First Feature Competition will be turned into a new programme with its own international jury – the Baltic Film Competition – screening a selection of feature-length films made in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The programme requires Estonian premiere for the Lithuanian and Latvian films (no premiere requirements for Estonian films) and is designed as a showcase of the best Baltic cinematic output from the last year. The programme will have one award - Award for Best Baltic Feature Film with a grant of 3200 Euros, shared by the director and producer.

The festival will also continue its two other competition programmes. The Official Selection Competition will look for films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. With world, international or European premiere as a eligibility criterium.

The First Feature Competition, open for filmmakers presenting their feature debut, will accept films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. That have not had their world or international premiere.

Submissions are also open for all the non-competitive sections of the festival. The programme will include around 200 feature films and documentaries. The final day for submissions is the 17th of August.

The 17th Youth and Children’s film festival Just Film is looking for films for its youth and children’s competitions and documentary sections. Submissions will stay open until the 17th of August.

The 2nd PÖFF Shorts, showcasing short films and animations, will run from the 20th to the 25th of November. The festival saw the merging of two separate sub-festivals last year - the animation film festival Animated Dreams and the International Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers. The new festival has retained the identities and most programmes of the former festival. Submissions close on the 25th of August.

TAIPEI by Jason Lester Romance under influence - USA, first feature film 96 minutes

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Filmfestivals.com Bruno Chatelin

Taipei%20Still%207.jpeg

Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.

Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.

Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival 2018 Awards

0
0
On Saturday, the 14th of July, the 14th edition of Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival came to a conclusion. This year, we screened 29 feature films, 10 documentaries and 53 short films from 29 countries, with 6 features, 6 documentaries and 25 short films being shown in the competition program.

At the closing ceremony, the following awards were given:

-VICIOUS CAT for best feature film:
ERREMENTARI (Spain, France; 2017; directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo)

Special mention:
VIDAR THE VAMPIRE (Norway; 2018; directed by Thomas Aske Berg and Fredrik Waldeland)

-NOISY CAT for best music documentary:
BUNCH OF KUNST – A FILM ABOUT SLEAFORD MODS (Germany; 2017; directed by Christine Franz)

-SLAK'S VICIOUS CAT for best short film:
WYRMWOOD: CHRONICLES OF THE DEAD (Australia; 2017; directed by Kiah Roache-Turner)

-MELIES D'ARGENT, the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation award for best European fantastic short film:
THE BOX (Slovenia; 2017; directed by Dušan Kastelic)

-AUDIENCE AWARD for best feature film:
ERREMENTARI (Spain, France; 2017; directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo)

-VICIOUS CAT WINE CHAMPION for best wine:
YELOW MUSCAT 2016 (Kovačič)

The winning film of the Little Workshop of Horrors is MONDAYS (Slovenia; 2017; directed by Staš Milovanović).

Jury motivations:

- VICIOUS CAT (Jury: Julian Richards, Nenad Bekvalac, Ludvik Bagari)

»The 2018 Vicious Cat winner has been decided. It was a close competition between two very different films and after some deliberation the jury decided to present the award to Paul Urkijo Alijo's dark Basque fantasy ERREMENTARI.

The jury were impressed with the ambition of the film and the directors ability to deliver such a fantastic visual spectacle with limited time and resources. The cinematography, production design, costume design and special effects are all worthy of note, as is the casting and performance of young actress Uma Bracaglia who brought a convincing human touch.

ERREMENTARI echoes the work of significant  genre directors such as Ridley Scott (Legend),  Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrnth) and Peter Jackson (Lord Of The Rings) and the jury hope that this award will help the director continue with his vision and carve out a career as significant as his predecessors.

Coming a close second, and therefore receiving a special mention of the jury is Norwegian black comedy VIDAR THE VAMPIRE, a Dogma-esque tale of a hapless vampire in search of love, written, produced, co-directed and starring Thomas Aske Berg.

Berg's infectious energy and smart sense of irony drives the film forward and evokes the work of British comedy actor / film-maker Sascha Baron Cohen (Borat, The Dictator, Ali G).«

- NOISY CAT (Jury: Igor Vidmar, Robbie Davidson, Matej Končan)

»After what was a split decision, the jury reached their verdict, and a hard one at that.
As informative, atmospheric and utterly engrossing as the Laibach movie was, a Bunch on Kunst was simplistic, real and had pure human emotion as well as what was obviously a labour of love chronicling the bands rise to fame filmed over 2 years. Despite their meteoric rise, the lads stayed true to their roots, no fancy stage show, no gimmicks, just two guys giving it their all with a microphone, 3 beer crates and a laptop with their unashamedly raw and unabashed take on the state of the UK and beyond.«

- SLAK'S VICIOUS CAT (Jury: Lee Hardcastle, Dejan Ognjanović, Vasja Rovšnik)

»This film is awarded for its cinematic skills to convey a complex narrative purely through images and sounds, with not a word of dialogue. Dynamic and powerful set-pieces are worthy of the best ones usually found in feature-length films.«

-MELIES D'ARGENT (Jury: Lee Hardcastle, Dejan Ognjanović, Vasja Rovšnik)

»This film is a thought-provoking, universally recognizable parable of uniformity and the struggle against it, told with stunning, unforgettable SF-gothic imagery. It is a darkly comic warning for our times, modern both in its form and its content.«

Official opening of the 9th Odesa International Film Festival with The Woman at War

0
0

On July 13, the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater saw the solemn opening ceremony of the OIFF-2018, during which the films of the competition programs, the jury members and other famous guests were presented

The opening ceremony of the OIFF-2018 united film professionals from all over the world. Janina Sokolova and Oleh Panyuta were the hosts at the event. This year, OIFF received 1011 applications, and out of them, 108 films from 95 countries will be presented at the festival.

The ceremony started with an incredible performance by Apache Crew dance crew.

Pavel Rozenko, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, gave the introductory remarks urging everyone to support Oleg Sentsov, since that day the illegally imprisoned director turned 42 years old. Throughout the days of the Festival there will be a special place reserved for Oleg for each screening. And a short video telling about his decision to announce an indefinite hunger strike since May 14 will precede every film.

Pylyp Illenko, the head of Ukrainian State Film Agency, said: "The Odessa Film Festival and Ukrainian cinema are united in the process of revival of Ukrainian cinema that we are seeing today". Besides, he noted, that the number of Ukrainian films is increasing each year and this year OIFF has 49 of them. Then the floor went to Maxim Stepanov, the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration; to Anatoliy Urbansky the chairman of the Odesa Regional Council and to Gennadiy Trukhanov, the mayor of Odessa.

Victoria Tigipko, the OIFF President, greeted the guests of the film festival and said: "The OIFF program is unique. But unfortunately, 90% of the pictures that will be shown here, at the Odesa Film Festival, will not join Ukrainian film distribution. Therefore, coming to Odesa in summer gives you a chance to see them on a big screen. Today we are observing the renaissance of cinema in Ukraine. And we can judge not only by festival films - commercial cinema is also gaining momentum. The box office of such films as "Kiborgs", "The Stolen Princess", "Dzidzio contrabass" has amounted to 20-35 million hryvnias. And this is with only 520 cinema halls. Fair enough, we need at least twice as many. But even now we can talk about the prospects of high-quality cinema".

The first award of the 9th Odesa International Film Festival – the Golden Duke for the contribution to the cinema – was given by a special OIFF guest – Eric Roberts. "Truthiness is what we, actors, want to achieve. And only a few of us succeed", he noted. The first prize was awarded to Ada Rogovtseva. "You can hardly imagine what I'm feeling right now," said the legendary actress. “At the age of only two months I was brought to Odesa. Here I grew up and enjoyed my happy life when the war began. My childhood was burned down by that terrible war. After that I have been living, living, living for quite a long time (because I’m getting 81 in 3 days) and now it’s war again. And again we are talking about a boy who is like a son to me. We are talking about Sentsov. And about those guys who are now at war. But we all do have enough strength, inspiration, kindness and mercy to create and to come to such important events as today"
