An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

ab6f962d8384175b_org.jpg
Since 2000 half of the winners of Stockholm International Film Festivals’ most prestigious award, the Bronze horse, have been female directors. It is unique for a film festival to both screen and award women and men equally in one competition. Stockholm Film Festival has been working hard for many years to promote female directors in the film industry. Female directors are in general less likely to get funding, which results in fewer movies directed by women. But despite tha...

Chicago Comedy Film Festival Announces 2017 Feature Film Lineup

The 7th Annual Chicago Comedy Film Festival will take place November 9th-11th at The Second City Harold Ramis Film School and The New 400 Theater. Film selections have been made and here is the lineup of feature films.

Room for Rent (89 Min) (Canada) When a reclusive man-child convinces his parents to rent their spare room to save from downsizing, a stranger with a hidden agenda moves in. Starring Mark Little, Mark McKinney, Stephanie Weir.

For the Love of George (89 Min) (United States) It's a comedy about a British woman who discovers her husband cheating on her and sets off to Los Angeles hoping to meet her dream man i.e., George Clooney! Through a funny series of near misses and unrelated adventures, she comes to the understanding that her destiny is in herself, not in any man, no matter how seemingly perfect. Starring Nadia Jordan, Rex Lee, Kristen Johnston, Rosanna Arquette.

Love in Moreno Valley (80 Min) (United States) Straight out of MoVal, a multi-cultural suburb in California, James plays guitar in his room and hides from his emotionally unstable single-father whose fantasy baseball obsession and romantic life render him intolerable. Once tenth grade begins at Vista Christian High School, James is reunited with his unlikely best friend, Abe, a wildchild whose antics draw a lot of negative attention to both he and James, much to the chagrin of their odd, stringent principal, Mr. Durante. Meanwhile, James is preoccupied with trying to impress a cute Latina named Carla, only to find Abe’s outrageous antics are hurting his chances. Things only get worse for the duo when Principal Durante punishes them by forcing them to perform during the weekly chapel assembly.

Something Out of Nothing (54 Min) (United States) Jack Farrell, a Chicago improv performer and teacher, and Josh DaSilva, Chicago filmmaker, set out to discuss why and how improv After School Matters programs work and why. The film was DaSilva's master thesis project for DePaul University. Interviews with Susan Messing and Dionna Griffins.

Special Unit (102 Min) (United States) Due to the fairness in disabilities act, the Van Nuys P.D. is forced to hire four handicapped undercover detectives, and their training officer is the worst cop in L.A.. Starring and produced by Christopher Titus. A note from Titus: "This movie was written to cross that line and stop making them "Special" and instead, make them just like us. Able, angry, funny, demanding, funny, fearless and again, funny. We did not treat them precious at all in this script. You can't make a difference feathering the accelerator so in this movie we pulled the PC limiter and dropped the hammer. The idea for SPECIAL UNIT came to me in a flash and I had to pull my car over because I was laughing so hard. Combustion Films' motto is "Funny First", but after we get that, we want to make a difference with whatever we do.

Everybody Has an Andy Dick Story (77 Min) (United States) Every generation has it's legendary characters. The icons who have lived outrageous lives, created hilarious stories that only their closest friends have access to. This documentary makes you feel like you are a part of it. Like you are at the party. And because Andy has created thousands of great stories, there's a pretty good chance that you have a story about him. And let's face it, after decades of partying, these people just might remember the stories just a little bit better than Andy does. Interviews with Pauly Shore, Kate Flannery, Margaret Cho, Ben Stiller, Ray Charles, Kathy Griffin, and more make this documentary one wild ride.

Passes and tickets are now onsale at www.chicagocomedyfilmfestival.com.

2017 Heartland Film Festival

Heartland Film, organizer of the 26th annual Heartland Film Festival (Oct. 12-22, 2017), has announced its full lineup of titles slated for its inaugural “Foreign Language Best Picture Contender” sidebar. These 10 titles are the respective country’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2018 Academy Awards®. “Each year, Heartland Film Festival proudly showcases a healthy percentage of foreign language films which are much admired, roundly discussed and debated by our audiences,” said International Film Programmer Hannah Fisher. “We present this year – for the first time – a section of films submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration in the category known as 'Best Foreign Language Film.'

“We anticipate this program will grow and evolve in stature, in much the same way that that Heartland Film Festival continues to gain international recognition and prominence. Heartland is thrilled to be among the first North American film festivals to showcase these foreign language contenders,” concluded Fisher.

Heartland Film Festival (Oct. 12-22, 2017) showcases more than 200 independent films over 11 days of red carpet premieres and events, parties and hundreds of film screenings across Indianapolis. The Heartland Film Festival has earned the special designation of being a qualifying festival for the Annual Academy Awards® within the Short Films category. Each year, the Heartland Film Festival awards more than $100,000 in cash prizes and presents its Festival Awards to top-judged submissions. Heartland Film has awarded more than $3 million to support indie filmmakers over the last 25 years. Beyond the Heartland Film Festival, Heartland Film honors theatrically-released films that align with its mission via the Truly Moving Picture Award, inspires the next generation of filmmakers via the Heartland Film Institute, and exhibits films across Indiana all year long via the Heartland Film Roadshow. The Seville Festival is creating Filmlovers of the Future, a competitive section for adolescents

The Seville Festival is creating Filmlovers of the Future, a competitive section for adolescents differentiated from the Europa Junior children’s section

The Seville Festival, committed to the education of audiences and the work of stimulating the public through film experience, is expanding its educational and media literacy programme in 2017 with the creation of the Filmlovers of the Future section.

This new competitive section arises from the need to attend to an adolescent public with their own discourses and interests. It brings together films that previously were grouped with others which were child oriented in the Europa Junior section, as well as some titles appropriate for audiences from 12 to 19 which are also participating in the New Waves section at the Seville Festival. So a dozen films having their national premiere will come together under the title Filmlovers of the Future, with the aim of drawing young people to the cinema as a means of expression and a way of explaining what is around them. The films and their directors, whom they will meet at presentations and debates, will introduce them to a cinema different from what they’re used to, that they understand and that talks about them.

Several films in Filmlovers of the Future tackle education in the classrooms as a setting in which to talk about young people’s problems. The educational models and teachers who are involved in the lives of their pupils are the protagonists of films like Orchestra Class by Rachid Hami starring Kad Merad (The Chorus, Welcome to the Sticks) where education is an instrument for personal rehabilitation and music is the medium for channeling the pupils’ potential. With a documentary aspect, we go into the integrated classrooms of Children of Chance by Thierry Michel & Pascal Colson, or into those which prepare youngsters from disadvantaged surroundings to face the world through an oratory competition as happens in Speak up by Stéphane de Freitas & Ladj Ly.

The filmlovers of the future will discover how a timid young man from Manchester who listened to the New York Dolls and read Oscar Wilde became Morrisey, the legendary, intelligent, unclassifiable singer of the Smiths, in the biopic England is Mineby Mark Gill; and they will learn of the adventures, sexual awakenings and life lessons of the young people in The War of Bumpkinsby Davide Barletti and Lorenzo Conte. The lives of young protagonists when faced with hostile environments and the world of adults are central plots in films like the British drama in the form of dystopia The White King by Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel, the drama about directionless lives inMobile Homes by Vladimir de Fontenay or the winner of the Audience Award at the Edinburgh Festival Just Charlie by Rebekah Fortune¸ which looks at the conflict of gender identity at an early age with football as the background. This selection is completed with Mrs. Hyde by Serge Bozon, an irreverent comedy which is also participating in The New Waves and stars Isabelle Huppert, in a revision of the classic of fantasy literature created by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The films will be screened in the Cine Zona Este and the Lope de Vega Theatre, in original version with subtitles, and it is the young spectators who, through their votes, will choose the winning film in each of the sections. The Europa Junior section, for audiences from 3 to 12 years of age, which we will announce shortly, and the Filmlovers of the Future section will bring over 20,000 children and adolescents to the cinemas to experience at first hand a European cinema that is aimed at them. In these sessions arranged with the city’s educational centres, the festival has the support of the Territorial Delegation for Educational Planning and the Education Service of the Department of Education, Civil Participation and Municipal Buildings of Seville City Council which will also offer 180free workshops for education in audiovisual matters. The workshops will be held in the educational centres, between one and two weeks before the start of the festival as satellite complementary activities to Europa Junior and also to Filmlovers of the Future. These activities will continue for several weeks after the Seville Festival ends. The activity in 2017 will be available to over 5,000 pupils.

However the festival will go further in its involvement with the young audience. Today training begins for the third generation of the festival’s Young Programmers, an initiative through which a dozen secondary and university students learn to analyse films and get to know the festival from within, choosing one of the films that will form part of the competitive section The New Waves. For the third consecutive year the Seville Festival and the association A Bao A Qu (responsible for the programme ‘Cine en curso’, and which already collaborates with organizations such as the CCCB, the Film Archive of Catalonia, MACBA, el CGAI or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía) set up this initiative as part of the European programme Moving Cinema. The participants, guided by specialized teachers, will have to work in a team and discuss what they have seen, thus gaining practice and knowledge in film programming. Last year the festival’s Young Programmers selected the film Daydreams by Caroline Deruas to be included in the festival’s programme.

The RIDM announces the opening and closing films for its 20th edition!

The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), which returns for a 20th year this November 9 to 19, is pleased to announce the opening and closing films for this anniversary edition. 24 Davids, an essay by Céline Baril filmed on three continents, will have its world premiere on Thursday, November 9. To close this major documentary festival, Nothingwood by Sonia Kronlund, an unforgettable portrait of Afghanistan’s king of Z-movies, will be shown on November 18. Two bold films directed by women filmmakers.

Opening film – 24 DAVIDS

A thinking person’s road movie, 24 Davids travels to three continents for a 24 inspiring encounters. The people we meet seem very different from one another, except that they’re all named David. And they are also given to deep thinking about major issues facing the world, and a desire to work for change.

For more than two decades, Céline Baril has been one of the most original voices in Quebec’s film industry. Working against the grain of formulaic movies, her approach is grounded in boundless curiosity and an artist’s focused eye. The cinematic essay is her favoured medium. Since Barcelone (1989), she has travelled the world and met members of many different cultures in her quest to create a humane, critical portrait of the world today.

The world premiere of 24 Davids will be presented in the Alumni Auditorium (H-110) at Concordia University on Thursday, November 9 at 7 p.m. (by invitation only), with the filmmaker in attendance. There will be a public screening during the festival’s first weekend.

24 Davids is produced by Colette Loumède at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Its theatrical release is slated for February 2, 2018.

Closing film – NOTHINGWOOD

Screened at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes this year, Nothingwood is the first film by French journalist Sonia Kronlund. The film is a feisty, fascinating portrait of Salim Shaheen, a larger-than-life figure with a consuming passion for the movies who has become the uncontested king of Afghanistan’s micro-budget Z-movie scene. Making more than 10 films a year, he pushes back against everyday horrors with popular flicks. Kronlund captures him with an apt blend of fascination and critical distance, profiling the personality of a self-taught artist and entrepreneur who has a talent for telling tall tales that bring people together. A journey to the intersection of movies and reality.

The North American premiere of Nothingwood will close the festival, with director Sonia Kronlund in attendance, on Saturday, November 18 at 7 p.m. (in the original English, French, Pashto and Dari, with French subtitles), in the Alumni Auditorium at Concordia University (H-110). Tickets for the closing night screening will go on sale on October 18 at noon.

Presented in collaboration with the Service de coopération et d’action culturelle of the Consul General of France in Quebec, the department of art history and film studies at the Université de Montréal, the Observatoire du cinéma au Québec, UniFrance and FUNFILM. There will be a second screening of Nothingwood on Sunday, November 19.

Distributed by FUNFILM. The film’s theatrical release is scheduled for Winter 2018.

About Founder, CEO Kweighbaye Kotee

Kweighbaye Kotee is an entrepreneur, filmmaker, writer and TV host. Over the past 10 years, she has developed creative ways to use the power of media, culture and arts to bridge communities. In 2007, she founded The Bushwick Film Festival (BFF). The Festival celebrates independent film, provides chances for diverse filmmakers to exhibit their work and creates spaces where audiences can gather and enjoy independent cinema. In 2015, Kotee founded Media Culture & Communications Group (MCCG). MCCG works in tandem with companies and rapidly changing neighborhoods to help open lines of communication and create opportunities that support artistic sustainability and preserve long-standing cultural landscapes in various ways. Dedicated to her community and the arts, she is the Executive Director of two Brooklyn-based non-profit organizations and is a Bushwick Community Board member serving on the Arts & Culture and Land Use Committees.

Born in Liberia, she and her family immigrated to the U.S. at the brink of the Liberian Civil war. Kotee attended public school in Newark, NJ where she was awarded a scholarship from the Wight Foundation to attend Blair Academy. She moved on to receive her B.S in Media, Culture and Communications from New York University. Currently, Kweighbaye lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

About the Bushwick Film Festival

Founded in 2007, The Bushwick Film Festival (BFF) is a leading independent film and media company in Brooklyn. A decade into its mission, BFF is hailed as one of Brooklyn's most influential cinematic events for its contribution to the borough's artistic, cultural, and economic growth. The festival attracts film and entertainment industry leaders at national and international levels and showcases films created by the best emerging independent filmmakers in Brooklyn, including the works of international filmmakers from over 30 different countries. In addition, BFF proudly shines a spotlight on diverse filmmakers. Its mission is to inspire filmmakers to harness the spirit of entrepreneurship, give them a platform to grow an audience, help strengthen their networks, increase their chances to connect with industry professionals, and present them opportunities to make a living doing what they love. Its mission to its audiences is to provide spaces where people from all backgrounds can gather and enjoy new and exciting niche films that are not typically made available and/or accessible to them, along with opportunities to attend educational and cultural events.

The festival is looking forward to celebrating its 10th Anniversary from October 12-15.

FilmFestival Cottbus (FFC) explores the lives of young people in U18: Love in the Times of Internet

$

With its U18 Youth Film Competition, the 27th FilmFestival Cottbus (FFC) explores the lives of young people in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Nine feature- and medium-length films from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic will compete in the U18 Youth Film Competition of the 27th FFC (7 to 12 November 2017) for the prize for Best Youth Film endowed with EUR 3,000 bestowed by Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG). As in previous years, the prize will be awarded by a tri-national jury of pupils from the 5th Lyceum Zielona Góra, the Gymnazium Teplice and, for the first time, the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Cottbus.

“This year’s U18 Youth Film Competition is an inspiration with its enormous variety. It addresses big issues such as family, self-determination, digital worlds and, of course, the exciting adventure of love”, says U18 curator Jarek Godlewski. “The films are fast-paced, entertaining, artistic and at times a little thrilling – an enthralling programme for teenagers and young adults alike.”

From junkie to iron man: the Polish director Łukasz Palkowski tells the true story of Jerzy Górski in BREAKING THE LIMITS. At a young age, Jerzy consumes hard drugs with his clique. When many of his friends die as a result of overdosing, he decides to fight against his addition by keenly pursuing athletic goals. A gripping biopic that recently won three awards at the renowned Polish film festival Gdynia.

Another recent award winner is LOMO – THE LANGUAGE OF MANY OTHERS by Julia Langhof. Principal actor Jonas Dassler won the Götz George Award for Emerging Talents at First Steps. He plays Karl, who is fed up with satisfying the wishes of his ambitious parents and therefore regularly ‘feeds’ his blog by mercilessly posting his unfiltered experiences. A gripping drama that innovatively explores the world of digital natives in their search for meaning.

MONTENEGRO by Petr Kubík likewise gathers pace by virtue of the internet: this is where the young Czechs Tomaš und Adam arrange to undertake an off-road Jeep tour through Montenegro with two young Serbian women. A charming road movie with strong cars, stunning landscapes, plenty of jealousy and the spirit of summer.

The U18 Youth Film Competition is supported by Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG) and the Brandenburg State Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK). “The FilmFestival Cottbus’s U18 Youth Film Competition and the tri-national student meeting add to exchange within the border triangle on a very special level”, says Dr Martina Münch from the MWFK. “The youths from Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany meet in Cottbus on a cinematic and a personal level and in doing so discover connectedness, yet perhaps also differences in their lives, which in turn initiates dialogue. I am delighted that this competition forms part of the festival. Europe needs such formats that promote mutual understanding and the engagement with a wide range of different cultures. This is particularly important for our young generation, as it is they who will shape the vision of Europe.”

Save the date – Press conferences
The 27th FilmFestival Cottbus and the co-production market connecting cottbus (coco) extend their joint invitation to their press conferences on October 19thin Berlin (11 am, Federal Representation Offices of the Federal State of Brandenburg in Berlin, In den Ministergärten 3, 10117 Berlin) and Cottbus (4 pm, Galerie Fango, Amalienstr. 10, 03044 Cottbus), where media representatives will be given exclusive information about the feature film and short film competitions and the coco programme. In addition, curators of the sections will be present for background talks. Please register at: presse@filmfestival-cottbus.de

The 44th edition of Film Fest Gent has kicked off with the Belgian premiere of Philippe Van Leeuw’s award-winning drama ‘Insyriated’, attended by the director and actress Juliette Navis. During the opening night, a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award was also given to Pierre Drouot, the CEO of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF). Until 20 October, Film Fest Gent will showcase almost 120 features, docs and TV series and over twenty shorts.

In light of the theme of the opening film – an intense drama about two Syrian families taking refuge for the war in their besieged flat – Film Fest Gent has joined forces with Cinemaximiliaan, a pop-up cinema for and with refugees in Belgium, making it possible for visitors of the festival to make a contribution during the opening night or when purchasing tickets during the festival.

During the opening night, a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award honouring special contributions to the art of filmmaking, was given to Pierre Drouot, the current CEO of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF). Having headed the fund for over ten years and guiding a new generation of filmmakers, Drouot is to retire at the end of the year.

Eleven days of film and music
Over the next days, the festival is set to welcome a wide range of international film guests on the red carpet including Ruben Östlund, Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris and Lynne Ramsay among others. In addition, Film Fest Gent remains a hot spot for Belgian filmmakers and is proud to present the world premiere of new work by Bert Scholiers, Kaat Beels & Nathalie Basteyns, Christina Vandekerckhove, Kristof Hoornaert and Sahim Omar Kalifa among others.

Italian cinema is at the heart of the festival this year with two Italian films in competition, a special Focus on Italian Cinema illustrating its significant renaissance in recent years, a selection of the finest contemporary Italian shorts and a special Classics section full of political films by Italian top directors from the sixties and seventies.

This year, Film Fest Gent also presents two unique trails that combine films with a similar theme. The Changemakers trail bundles films that call for action or try to make a change in the world, while Metamovies focuses on films about, or with a clear reference to the medium film itself.

On 18 October, the World Soundtrack Awards are handed out in the presence of main guests Terence Blanchard, Joe Kraemer and David Shire. Also attending are such top-notch composers as Dustin O’Halloran & Hauschka, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Dave Porter and Dan Jones among others. Held on 19 October, the Symphonic Jazz in Film Concert celebrates the best jazz soundtracks of the past century, performed by Brussels Philharmonic and Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

Finally, Film Fest Gent and Vooruit are joining forces again, focussing on the combination of images and music through live film scores, performances with projection, expanded cinema and everything in between.

The 44th Film Fest Gent takes place from 10 till 20 October at Kinepolis Ghent, Studio Skoop, Sphinx Cinema, Vooruit, KASKcinema and Capitole Ghent. To check the full line-up, please visit www.filmfestival.be.

In special recognition of Finland's 100th birthday, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has created a special programme of 23 films celebrating Finnish cinematic history, which will be shown in a 48-hour-long marathon screening.

The unprecedented screening is set to take place between the 24th and 26th of November at the old cinematheque Kinomaja in Tallinn’s Old Town. The events programme will include a karaoke contest and a live peformance by the band Marko Haavisto & Poutahaukat, who gained fame performing in Aki Kaurismäki’s The Man Without a Past. The screenings will be introduced by various Finnish filmmakers, including director Jörn Donner and actress Kati Outinen.

The opening film will be Jörn Donner’s legendary documentary Fuck Off! Images of Finland (1971), a cross-section of Finnish society in 1970, where beauty and ugliness, sad and funny, gentle and obscene co-exist organically. The uncut version only received screening permission at the end of the 1980’s.

The selected films have been made between the years 1938 and 2008, genres include drama, thriller, horror, erotic, crime and comedy, all of them having gained a cult status in Finland and most having never been shown in Estonia. All the movies will be screened from 35mm films.

The programme has been curated by the reputable Sodankylä Midnight Sun Film Festival, that was founded and is artistically consulted by Aki and Mika Kaurismäki.

“The selection represents the diverse mental landscape of Finland. We interpret the word ‘cult’ as broadly as possible, using it to name films that have aroused both admiration and indignation, and have lived longer than one generation. On top of that, this feast will be screened on celluloid, making it a rare one-time pleasure,” said Milja Mikkola, the festival director of Sodankylä festival.

Black Nights’ sub-festival PÖFF Shorts will screen a selection of Aki Kaurismäki’s short films.
