First published in The Santa Barbara Independent - Friday, February 2, 2018

Director Susan Kucera has achieved something masterful with her film, an entry in the growing population of ecological cautionary tales beautiful, nature-affirmative, humanity-questioning imagery and intelligent commentary, akin to Koyaanisqatsi (“world out of balance”) and Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth franchise, but expanding the canvas to include psychological and anthropological side trips.

The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

Festival successfully expanded in new directions

This weekend, the screening of Armando Iannucci’s The Death of Stalin brought a close to the 47th edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). The festival initiated several innovations: the arts programme Frameworks, online streaming platform IFFR Unleashed, the two-day distribution conference Reality Check and a refocused edition of CineMart.
531 feature, mid-length and short films screened this year, of which 140 world premieres. IFFR welcomed 2,405 film professionals from all corners of the world, among whom 332 filmmakers.

The festival opened on 24 January with the world premiere of Jimmie by Jesper Ganslandt. Apichatpong Weerasethakul was in Rotterdam to present his SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL, a unique project allowing visitors to sleep surrounded by moving images. And IFFR collaborated with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra to present a special screening with live performance of the score of Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film with Anderson and Vicky Krieps present. IFFR 2018 counted more than 329,000 visits, up from last year's 314,000. A grand total of 76 films received an audience rating of 4 (out of 5) or higher, busting last year’s record of 63.

Clockwise: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Armando Iannucci, Charlotte Rampling, Paul Schrader, Jan Švankmajer, Alfredo Jaar, Sean Baker, Lucrecia Martel

This year, IFFR proudly presented an extensive Talks programme. Charlotte Rampling spoke about her role in Andrea Pallaoro’s Hannah and her impressive career; Alfredo Jaar reflected on the role of the artist in times of hunger and exploitation; Paul Schrader gave insight into his radical reworking of the film Dying of the Light as well as his new film First Reformed; Lucrecia Martel talked about her award winning Zama; Apichatpong Weerasethakul spoke about his unique artistic vision; Sean Baker elaborated on his latest indie hit The Florida Project; Armando Iannucci discussed the art of satire and Jan Švankmajer reviewed his long career in cinema, crowned by the world premiere of his latest film Insect. The Talks programme also included panel discussions on topics relating to the festival’s theme programmes. Many of the talks were streamed live on Facebook and YouTube. The total number of online views was 85,500, of which 29,000 were for Charlotte Rampling.

The festival offered five extensive theme programmes: House on Fire investigated the singular cinema coming from Tamil Nadu. PACT went deep into pan-Africanism, for example with the six-hour talk show Bridging the Gap. Curtain Call reflected on humanity’s self-defeating obsession with progress through exhibitions in LP2 and V2_. Maximum Overdrive celebrated the revival of a ’90s-inspired maximalist aesthetic and hosted the spectacular pop culture performance Totes Adorbs ♥ Hurricane. And A History of Shadows looked at the many ways in which cinema can revisit and reevaluate the past.

In the new art platform Frameworks, IFFR asked two renowned names in art to introduce  two upcoming talents, the Acolytes, who each received a €10,000 grant to finish a single-screen artwork. Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Alfredo Jaar introduced Pathompon 'Mont' Tesprateep and Grada Kilomba respectively. IFFR also put a special focus on the work of Polish artist Artur Żmijewski, presented a retrospective on the films of Argentinian filmmaker José Celestino Campusano and a Deep Focus Short Profile on the work of Chinese artist and filmmaker Zhou Tao.

Festival director Bero Beyer: “It was a pleasure to see our new ventures come to fruition and to welcome so many filmmakers to the festival. Besides showcasing new films and visions, we were also reminded of the relevance of an open platform such as IFFR. Mohammad Rasoulof is still not allowed to travel freely because Iranian officials were displeased by his film A Man of Integrity, which was supported by the Hubert Bals Fund and screened at our festival this year. And a day before the screening of our closing film The Death of Stalin by Armando Iannucci, armed Russian police raided a cinema in Moscow that ignored the Kremlin’s nation-wide ban of the film.”

The diversity of award winners shows that IFFR is truly a global festival. The Hivos Tiger Award was won by Chinese filmmaker Cai Chengjie’s The Widowed Witch, which the jury praised for its “lyrical layering of cinematographic elements” and “laconic sense of humour”. The Reports on Sarah and Saleem by Palestinian filmmaker Muayad Alayan won the Special Jury Award for its screenplay and achieved the highest audience rating of all Hubert Bals Fund-supported films. Brazilian filmmaker Marina Meliande’s Sultry was also discovered early by IFFR and was supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, as was Filipino filmmaker Shireen Seno’s Nervous Translation, which won the NETPAC Award for best Asian film. Gustav Möller’s tense debut The Guilty was the overall audience favourite, and also won the IFFR Youth Jury Award. For an overview of all winners, click here.

Distribution

With an eye on the future of independent film distribution, IFFR launched a brand new online streaming service, IFFR Unleashed, allowing year-round access to IFFR films as well as masterclasses and extras. The platform aims to support independent directors by offering them 50 percent of subscription fees as well as the final say about where and how their films are distributed. In just one week, over 1,000 users from 44 different countries have signed up. New films will be added to the IFFR Unleashed selection on a monthly basis, underlining IFFR’s commitment to helping quality films find their audiences.

IFFR presented the fourth edition of IFFR Live with six films, all by female directors and including the world premiere of Olga Chajdas’s Nina, winner of the VPRO Big Screen Award, and the European premiere of Amateurs by Gabriela Pichler. The films simultaneously screened in more than 45 cinemas worldwide. Audiences from all over the world were able to join in the post-screening talkshows. Special locations included the post-Mugabe Zimbabwean capital Harare, as well as Singapore and Curaçao.

Many of the big sales agents were present at the festival. Films picked up in international sales deals include Anna’s War by Alexey Fedorchenko, Fátima by João Canijo, Djon África by João Miller Guerra and Filipa Reis and Nervous Translation by Shireen Seno. Benelux distribution deals included Gustav Möller’s The Guilty, Gustavo Pizzi’s Loveling as well as two titles also selected for the Big Screen Competition, Pity by Babis Makridis and Nina by Olga Chajdas. The Belgian film Rabot by Christina Vandekerckhove was picked up for release in the Netherlands.

By focusing on fewer projects, CineMart aims to give more in-depth and year-round support to promising projects. Seven Hubert Bals Fund-supported titles screened at this festival edition. During IFFR 2018, four projects were presented at the VR Days event and nine projects previously supported by CineMart or HBF were presented during BoostNL. 59 people participated in Rotterdam Lab, a five-day training workshop for emerging producers.

Education

IFFR 2018’s expanded education programme was diverse and reached even more people than last year. There were special talks, screenings and workshops for young people and the IFFR Youth Jury presented a special award. More than 28,000 children and students attended our special programmes. We also organised a special workshop for teachers on how to incorporate film into the school curriculum.

16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival: XI Sixteen years is a long time in the life of a film festival. It seems an even bigger achievement when you consider the upheavals that the Third Eye Asian Film Festival has undergone during its tenure. In fact, it is a miracle that it has continued, against all odds. Asian Film Foundation, headed by Kiran Shantaram, son of late V. Shantaram, remains the driving force, as does Sudhir Nandgaonkar, journalist and a bunch of teenage students pool in their res...

Magnum Opus Padmavati adds a, drops i, eyes release on 25th January

Padmavaat%2C%20Press%20Release%20Poster_0.jpg
Magnum Opus Padmavati adds a, drops i, eyes release on 25th January It will now be called and spelt Padmaavat, from its original moniker of Padmavati. The deletion of the i is in deference to the wishes of many Indians who hold the folklore of Rani Padmavati very dear, and would not allow a film that shows the actor playing her dancing, midriff exposed, to be released. Protests led to a delay of eight weeks in rescheduling the release, and even now, entire states, like Rajasthan (where the st...

Downsizing%2C%20Poster.jpg
Downsizing, review: Mini We Once in a while, a movie comes along that renews our faith in creative writing and the ability of cinema to rise above its own decadence. Maybe it took a dozen ‘shrink’, ‘little’ and ‘antman’ films, from 1957 to 2015, to inspire the writers of Downsizing, the title itself a pun, but the resulting effort has a fresh new feel about it. After setting up a very interesting premise and some smooth as silk spellbinding VFX, the film th...

Insidious 4-The Last Key, review: Spectral Sightings by Psychic and her side-kicks Was a time when unfriendly ghosts used to have a motive for their haunting, and usually, it was revenge. Then, they began to exist for existence’s sake, in an alternate world, or the beyond, paranormal realm, crossing over accidentally into mother earth. Over time, they have inherited one most condemnable human trait--sadism. Once we stipulate that ghosts can exist solely with the motive of torturing hum...

Berlin Critics’ Week was founded four years ago with the activist intent of casting a different light on film culture, of questioning the many routines of the “business” (our own included), of conceiving of criticism as action, as an endeavor that shouldn’t just observe from afar, but also create incentives. It’s in this spirit that the Critics’ Week 2018 has set out on a new initiative, publishing the first edition of a book to accompany the program.

Somewhere between a festival catalogue and a compendium of essays, this publication brings together material pertaining to our program and rather loose ideas intended to frame the films and incite and invigorate our debates. Additionally, in the first part of the book, a number of short essays address the current state of cinema. We wanted to explore different fields and hear from different voices – the discussions range from the sociological to the philosophical, and our contributors include filmmakers, curators and critics.

An introductory conversation with B. Ruby Rich considers the current status of internationalfilm criticism. The former film critic, scholar, curator, and current editor of the film journal Film Quarterly discusses the political potential of critical writing, referring back to examples from her own decades-long career: her many achievements include being one of the preeminent theorists and champions of “New Queer Cinema.” Marie-Pierre Duhamel has worked in almost all fields of cinema – in her contribution “Programming a Festival in Extreme Conditions” she uses the example of a new event in the Chinese provinces to illustrate some of the challenges faced by film curators and those who wish to create new festival formats.

What are the predominant ideas concerning the public and what impact do they have on cinema? This is the question we want to ask in our little conference, which will kick off the Critics’ Week, and one we’ll keep grappling with over the following days. Through the contributions by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, sociologist Edgar Morin, film critic Didi Cheeka, as well as a theater pamphlet by the collective Forced Entertainment, we invite readers to consider this question from different perspectives.

In the book’s last part, intended as a closing reflection on the Berlinale in 2020– which may be only two years away in factual terms, but is perhaps a fair bit further removed in the mind’s eye – we want to address the elephant in the room: the ongoing debate about the future of the Berlinale. As the Critics’ Week, we naturally have our own opinion about it, but we’re above all interested in drawing attention to fundamental and structural questions. That’s why we not only asked different people to share their (condensed) visions of the future, but also sought to render the organizational structure of Germany’s largest film festival transparent for once, and to hold it up against alternative proposals by Rainer Knepperges and Max Linz. They are accompanied by a collage of short written statements by Barbara Albert, Robert Beavers, Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Sompot Chidgasornpongse, Vaginal Davis, Matthias Dell, Ben Gibson, Ulrich Gregor, Daniel Kasman, Fred Kelemen, Ekkehard Knörer, Gertrud Koch, Salomé Lamas and Tatjana Turanskyj.

The title of the book, “Koschke”, is inspired by the Berlin-based pub “Anna Koschke”, which over the years has turned out as a regular meeting point and a space for engaged discussions following the screenings and debates.

The publication can be purchased at Critics’ Week for 5 euros.

International Competition

George Perec’s famous novel Life a User's Manual guides the selection of this year’s IC section films

The International Competition section of the 20th anniversary edition of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival discovers the boldest new voices of contemporary documentary filmmaking, presenting the first or second films of the most promising directors from all over the world.

This year the festival selects the 10 IC films with George Perec’s famous novel Life a User’s Manualas guiding compass; a 600-page book with 2,000 characters and hundreds of stories, which highlights life as a puzzle that can never be solved. Perec challenges the reader in a mental game that tackles concepts such as time, memory, happiness, life and death, by looking at the life stories of the inhabitants of a Parisian apartment block, over a period of one hundred years. The author plays with the game of life itself. It is no coincidence that Perec was a distinguished member of OuLiPo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle), the most fascinating and literally entertaining literary movement of the 20th century.

OuLiPo’s philosophy involves the concept of the game, expanding in its various symbolisms and dimensions in art. One could argue that the selection process of the films that compete in a festival is indeed a playful self-constraining game, which, after all, does not impose any limits but rather emancipates us, by allowing us to determine its very own rules. One of OuLiPo’s founders, Raymond Queneau, once defined Oulipians as “rats who build the labyrinth from which they plan to escape.” Thus, as we also seek to escape from the labyrinth we build, we decided to use Georges Perec’s Life a User's Manual, as our guide in selecting films.

This year we invite you participate in this playful game that we could call OuFeCiPo (Ouvroir de Festival Cinématographique Potentiel). It is an alternative way to select, watch, review and reflect on films; and, of course, to experience them as a labyrinth whose walls are made of materials derived from literature and visual arts. Escaping this labyrinth is nothing but a wonderful, entertaining, educational, intellectual and, at the same time, playful game.

The films

All that Passes by a Window that Doesn’t Open by Martin Dicicco, USA-Qatar, 2017, 70’: Workers in Azerbaijan strive to build a new railroad between Europe and Asia, while a lonely Armenian stationmaster waits for 20 years for the return of the trains. These people’s routines, dreams and regrets are reflected amidst the troubled past and present of the region, in this beautifully shot documentary.

Angkarby Neary Adeline Hay, France, 2017, 71’: An engaging exploration of Cambodia’s recent history, as well as a personal diary about memory and identity, the film follows the director’s father who returns to the village where he lived as a prisoner and meets his former Khmer Rouge persecutors.

Awakenby Jiawei Ning, China, 2017, 62’: Spring arrives after a long winter and a fisherman in a Chinese village readies his fishing boat again. The struggle –and harmony- between man and nature is masterfully captured without any words.

Baronesa by Juliana Antunes, Brazil, 2017, 70’: Shot on location in the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the film offers a rare glimpse of favelas, through the women’s point of view. It introduces us to Leidiane and Andreia, who try to cope with the slum’s violence and dangers, but also enjoy friendship and love.

Las cinéphilas by María Álvarez, Argentina, 2017, 74': Retired women from Spain, Argentina and Uruguay share a common passion for films. They go to the cinema every day and experience films as a cure for loneliness or a way to forget the passage of time, in this sensitive, bittersweet documentary.

*Trailer:

The Distant Barking of Dogs by Simon Lereng Wilmont, Denmark-Finland-Sweden, 2017, 90’: Set in a half-deserted small village in Eastern Ukraine, the film centers on the daily life of 10-year-old Oleg who lives there with his beloved grandmother, remarkably recording what it means for a child to grow up in a warzone.

20th THESSALONIKI DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL [2-11/3/2018]

Poster rationale

Questions asking for answers

A starting point for every creative idea is a question that will trigger interest and motivate research. Is there time? Are they alive? How did you react? Simple words and a punctuation point provide a chance to find out the truth. A simple question begins and shapes the world of documentary, where the filmmaker will use it as a search tool, attempting to give an answer. Capturing the fundamental reason for creating a documentary, the reason why everything began, which marked the need of the director to explore a specific topic.

Isle of Dogs: Press Conference

A star-studded press conference opened the 2018 Berlinale, with the full cast of Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs in attendance for the tonight's premiere at the Berlinale Palast.

The stop motion animation takes us to near future Japan, where dogs are being extradited to a trash island away from humans, due to an infectious virus. When the mayor's nephew escapes in an attempt to find his dog Spots, the first that was sent away by his tyrannnic uncle, he sets off to a lifechanging adventure where he makes some new furry friends.

Director and writer Wes Anderson comes to the Berlinale for the fourth time, surrounded by an impressive cast including Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Bill Murray, Liev Schreiber and many more.

The majority attended the press conference this morning and spoke about the challenges of creating an animated film, the peculiar difficulties that you do not encounter with any other genre and the great sense of freedom and creativity it gives.

Wes Anderson spoke about "those little detials that make such a difference in animation and you need to constantly look for and improve. Like for example, two years into the project you notice that one of the puppets is not looking right and you have to change it all over. But it is all such great fun."

The entire cast referred to the great experience working with a master like Anderson and the amount of funny moments they had while giving their voices to the characters in the film.

Isle of Dogs opens the festival tonight and will be on general release in March.

21st edition of the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival March 5th - 15th 2018

The 21st anniversary edition of the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival features compelling stories and evocative documentaries about Iraqi, Syrian, Mexican, Egyptian, Israeli, French, Tunisian, Ethiopian, and Greek communities

The American Sephardi Federation’s NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival showcases contemporary voices steeped in the history, traditions, and rich mosaic culture of Greater Sephardic communities. The ten-day Festival features premiere film screenings, intriguing stories, evocative documentaries, Q&As with filmmakers, as well as special honorees and guests. The Pomegranate Awards Ceremony on Opening Night celebrates Sephardi excellence in the arts. Past recipients include Senior Counselor to the King of Morocco André Azoulay, French-Algerian recording legend Enrico Macias, Kuwaiti star and human rights activist Ema Shah, and Morocco-Israeli poet Erez Bitton.

Each night of the Festival is a different themed program honoring the rich and diverse communities ASF represents.

“For the NYSJFF 21st Edition, we are proud to present poignant and powerful programs, including a number of New York premieres,” said Sara Nodjoumi, Artistic Director of the New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival.

“From Stars, Konrad Wolf’s classic, cinematic gem on the Greek Holocaust experience, to Cecile Peck’s Brave Miss World about a Moroccan-Israeli beauty contestant’s struggle against sexual violence, these are universal stories that speak to the issues of our time (discrimination, persecution, immigration, resistance) and all time,” Nodjoumi said.

NYSJFF Artistic Director Sara Nodjoumi produced The Iran Job, and is a programming alumna of the Tribeca Film Festival, where her latest film, When God Sleeps, premiered earlier this year.

David Serero, the producer of the NYSJFF's star-studded 20th edition, returns to produce this year's Festival. A Moroccan-French opera singer and actor with many credits to his name, Serero previously created and starred in ASF's successful theatrical season (Merchant of Venice, Othello, and Nabucco), and will star in April and June 2018 as Cyrano de Bergerac and Don Giovanni at the ASF.

All films and events are taking place at the Center for Jewish History located at 15 West 16th Street. The complete list of selected NYSJFF films with dates, times, as well as pass and ticket information can be found at www.nysephardifilmfestival.org

Moroccan Opening Night, Monday, March 5th at 7pm.

On March 5th 2018 at 7pm, the Annual Pomegranate Awards Ceremony will feature a special performance of Sebt Gnawa, the revival of the seldom summoned Moroccan-Jewish spirits, by Grammy-nominated Innov Gnawa with Sephardi Jazz trumpeter Itamar Borochov.

The 21st NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival will commence with an exclusive cultural experience: the summoning of seldom heard Jewish spirits from the Gnawa repertoire.

Gnawa, the traditional, ritual healing music of black communities formed of former soldiers and slaves, who originated in Northern Mali and Mauritanian before being brought to Morocco, has "raw, hypnotic power [that has] fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix." Sometimes called "the Moroccan Blues," Gnawa features unique instrumentation "from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms."

Composed of Moroccan expatriates in America, the Grammy-nominated Innov Gnawa is working with Jaffa-born, Brooklyn-based Bukaharian Jazz trumpeter and composer Itamar Borochov to save the Sebt (in Moroccan Darija) or Shabbat spirits from oblivion. "Music is at the heart of the shared Judeo-Muslim Moroccan heritage. To have Itamar, whose played Jazz at Lincoln Center and whose latest album is a Downbeat Editor's Pick, come together with Innov to preserve and revive Sebt Gnawa is a most meaningful tribute to this legacy, and a wonderful way with which to celebrate the Moroccan culture of coexistence at the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival," says Jason Guberman, Executive Director of the American Sephardi Federation.

The evening will feature a reception of traditional kosher Moroccan cuisine and presentation of the Pomegranate Awards, designed by Baghdad-born artist and ASF Board Member Oded Halahmy.

Tuesday, March 6th at 7pm: The Syrian Sephardic Community

THE SYRIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY: OUR JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY

THE JEWS OF SYRIA, 1930-1967

Directed by Lisa Ades

Executive Produced by Joseph J. Sitt

Documentary Feature, 90 min, USA, 2014, English

From Executive Producer, Joseph J. Sitt, the sixth installment of his multi-part series on the Syrian Sephardi community, is the fascinating story of life in Syria for the Jews who remained there after the massive exodus to the US and other countries in the early 1900s. Weaving together stories of pogroms and fires in Aleppo and Damascus in 1947 and 1948, of repression and heroic escapes as Jews in Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt fled persecution, the mysterious Aleppo Codex (part of which was smuggled to safety in Israel), the courageous Rabbi Abraham Kalmanowitz who helped Syrian boys escape to New York, and the Jewish spy, Elie Cohen, who helped his brothers in Israel win the Six Day War before his capture and execution, this is an incredible film about one of the Jewish People’s oldest and most illustrious communities.

Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00pm: Anti-Semitism in France

WHY DO THEY HATE US?

Directed by Alexandre Amiel

Documentary Feature, 81 min, France, 2016, French with English subtitles

NY Premiere

Followed by a Panel discussion

In 2015, French and Belgian-born ISIS terrorists massacred civilians in Paris, including at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the famed Bataclan Theatre. Motivated by these attacks—the deadliest in France since World War II—and his son’s questions about the murderers, Alexandre Amiel, a French-Moroccan Sephardi filmmaker and veteran reporter, produced a trilogy of documentaries exploring hatred from the perspectives of its primary victims in French society by profiling three representatives: himself, Amelle Chahbi (a comedienne of Moroccan descent), and Lucien Jean-Baptiste (an actor and director who was born in the Caribbean). This NY premiere of the episode relating to anti-Semitism is a must-see in this age of rising religious and racial hatreds, nationalist chauvinism, and violence.

Thursday, March 8th at 7pm: Undying Romance in Mexico - Sephardi-style

NORA’S WILL

Directed by Mariana Chenillo

Narrative Feature, 90 min, Mexico, 2010, Spanish with English subtitles

Followed by a Mexican After-Party

When his ex-wife Nora dies right before Passover, José is forced to stay with her body until she can be properly put to rest. He soon realizes he is part of Nora’s plan to bring her family back together for one last Passover feast, leading José to rediscover their undying love for each other. A comedy like no other, and directed by Mariana Chenillo, the first female director to win Mexico’s Best Picture Award.

Saturday, March 10th at 8:30pm: Classic Movie Night: Greek Sephardim in the Holocaust

STARS

Directed by Konrad Wolf

Narrative Feature, 88 min, East Germany / Bulgaria, 1959, German, Bulgarian, Yiddish, and Ladino with English subtitles

A classic film from one of Germany’s greatest filmmakers, Stars won The Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959. The film exquisitely tells the story of a Nazi officer who falls in love with a Greek-Sephardi Jewish girl while escorting Jewish prisoners through Bulgaria to a concentration camp.

Sunday, March 11th at 1:30pm: The Promised Land: Ma’abarot Memories

THE ANCESTRAL SIN

Directed by David Deri

Documentary Feature, 109 min, Israel, 2017, Hebrew and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) with English subtitles

NY Premiere

In the first two decades after the re-establishment of Israel, the director’s family, originally from Morocco, were part of the wave of refugees from Greater Sephardi communities who came to the fledgling Jewish State.

As other immigrants coming to this Promised but poor land, Deri’s family were taken to a “development town,” Yeruham in the Negev Desert, as part of a population disbursement policy that pushed Sephardim to the country’s periphery. This chilling documentary shares personal stories that reveal the price immigrant-families have paid and the price still being paid by Israeli society for the discriminatory policies of its Ashkenazi-dominated early years.

ROCK IN THE RED ZONE (3:30pm)

Directed by Laura Bialis

Documentary Feature, 92 min, Israel, 2014, English & Hebrew with English subtitles

Fear and danger are never far for residents of the development town, Sderot, where missiles rain down on civilians routinely from Hamas and other Islamist forces in the nearby Gaza Strip. Despite the almost daily trauma, a community of young artists—Greater Sephardi Jews of mainly Moroccan, Kurdish, and Persian descent—have found an artistic outlet for their anger and hope, creating world-infused music every single day.

Sunday, March 11th at 5:30pm: The Egyptian Experience

STARTING OVER AGAIN

Directed by Ruggero Gabbai

Documentary Feature, 64 min, USA, 2015, English

NY Premiere
