The 69th edition of Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) drew to a close on Sunday night having screened 134 new features over the 12 day Festival.  More than 50,000 admissions represent a nine per cent increase on 2014.  An additional 14,600 people enjoyed the Festival’s two weekends of outdoor screenings, as part of Film in the City.

The Festival sold tickets for its venues across the city, which included the EIFF’s home at Filmhouse, its venue partner Cineworld, and at Festival Theatre Edinburgh, the Traverse, Dominion Cinema, Odeon Lothian Road, Royal Lyceum Theatre and Belmont Filmhouse in Aberdeen.

Ken Hay, CEO Edinburgh International Film Festival, commented; “There have been some truly memorable moments at the Festival this year, from the spectacular opening night World Premiere of THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON, Ewan McGregor’s sold out In Person at the Lyceum, the skype Q&A with the stars of our Documentary Award Winning Film THE WOLFPACK, the sensational screening of BACK TO THE FUTURE with the RSNO performing the score live, and the opportunity to meet filmmaking legends, Haskell Wexler and Johnnie To.  Our audiences have obviously responded to our rich and diverse programme and we are thrilled to see the increase in admissions.”

KHÔRA RESIDENCY Α 10-day residency for site-specific cinema & sound projects in the Cycladic island of Syros

Α 10-day residency for site-specific cinema & sound projects 26 June – 6 July 2015 Ano Syros, Cyclades, Greece

Invited artists: Michael Pisaro & Deborah Stratman (U.S.)

Khôra Residency is a new 10-day residency program for cinema and sound artists, on the Cycladic island of Syros. The residency will play host to a select group of artists working on film/video and sound/music, for an intensive collaborative project. The program is a joint initiative by Syros Sound Meetings and Syros International Film Festival.

Syros Sound Meetings have been organizing residencies and workshops on the island since 2012, and Syros International Film Festival is the annual film festival of Syros since 2013.

Khôra will take place at the Syros Institute, housed in a refurbished 16th-century Jesuit Monastery in Ano Syros.

Up to 12 active film-makers/video artists and musicians/ sound artists with a documented track record and interest in sitespecific, documentary, experimental and/or cross-media projects will be given the opportunity to stay at the premises and work in group to create original, collaborative sound-film works on the theme of Khôra, a key term in ancient and contemporary philosophies of place (including Plato, Derrida, Kristeva and others).

The resultant works will be screened as completed or in-progress projects at the end of the residency, and as part of the Syros International Film Festival. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with two internationally acclaimed guest artists, Michael Pisaro (composer, California Institute of the Arts) and Deborah Stratman (artist & filmmaker, University of Illinois at Chicago), who will also contribute their own projects. An important aspect of the residency is the required collaboration between cinema and sound artists. In various sized groups formed ad hoc and on site, joint projects will be undertaken, with the artists sharing responsibility in the development, production and editing of their projects. We hope that this dialogue will produce multi-faceted, hybrid pieces that will reflect different aesthetic and intellectual concerns and pay witness to distinct artistic processes; indeed, each piece will ‘come from different places’. Artists interested in the combination of visual and sound art, who have experience (or stake) in various disciplines at any level, are encouraged to apply. Please note that the working language of the residency will be English.

Film4 FrightFest serves up a fearsome feast with a record 76 films, embracing 20 world and 42 UK & European premieres

$

Bigger, bolder, bloodier…Film4 FrightFest 2015 marks its 16th year with its largest  line-up ever. From Thurs 27 August to Mon 31 August, the UK’s leading event for genre fans will return to the Vue West End, Leicester Square to present seventy-six films across five screens, plus a host of special events. There are eighteen countries representing five continents with a record-breaking sixteen European premieres and twenty-six UK premieres. In addition, there is a further ‘Discovery’ strand at The Prince Charles Cinema, signalling a welcome return to FrightFest’s spiritual home.

FrightFest always takes great pride in platforming the brightest British and Irish talent and 2015 is an outstanding year. Apart from opening with David Keating’s CHERRY TREE, there is the world premiere of Steve Oram’s hilarious and very disturbing AAAAAAAAH!, Dominic Brunt’s sharp-edged female revenge saga BAIT, Ben and Chris Blaine’s sexually charged zom-rom-com NINA FOREVER, Mark Murphy’s tale of twisted minds, AWAITING, Paul Hyett’s much-anticipated HOWL, Adam Levins’ sinister family drama ESTRANGED, Howard J. Ford’s pulsating child-abduction thriller NEVER LET GO, Corin Hardy’s Sundance sensation THE HALLOW, Ruth Platt’s morally-challenging chiller THE LESSON, Liam Regan’s gruesome revenge saga BANJO, Eugene McGing’s supernatural haunter THE UNFOLDING and finally AFTERDEATH, a hellish thriller by new directors Gez Medinger and Robin Schmidt.

The Main screens shine brightly with a vivid, stellar mix of the monstrous, the macabre and the must-see. Apart from our closing anthology TALES OF HALLOWEEN and our ‘gorious’ festive attraction A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY, there is Iain Softley’s cleverly vicious CURVE, Bernard Rose’s stylishly affecting FRANKENSTEIN, Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s masterpiece SCHERZODIABOLICO, Abner Pastoll’s deranged ROAD GAMES, Alistair Legrand’s genre-bending shocker THE DIABOLICAL, Ted Geoghegan’s well-received ghost story WE ARE STILL HERE, Adam Schindler’s agoraphobic SHUT IN, Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell & Yoann-Karl Whissell’s post-apocalyptic romp TURBO KID, Bruce McDonald’s Halloween horror HELLIONS and Levan Bakhia’s explosive LANDMINE GOES CLICK. Plus, the Israeli Paz Brothers put the grim in pilgrimage with JERUZALEM, director Adam Egypt Mortimer gives us his cutting-edge “feminist slasher movie” SOME KIND OF HATE, first-time director Eric Hannezo gives us his version of RABID DOGS, STUNG lets loose a battalion of giant wasps and Australian director Ursula Dabrowsky bring us her highly unusual shocker INNER DEMON.  Completing the main screen mayhem is splatstick psycho-thriller DEATHGASM, suburban shocker SLUMLORD, the brilliantly unnerving EMELIE, the stark, gore-filled NIGHT FARE and JAMES WAN’S DEMONIC.

Embracing the ever-burgeoning independent arena, this year’s increased number of films in the Discovery Screens illustrates the growing global investment in the genre. From Australia and France, Mexico and Russia, Argentina and Peru, FrightFest showcases the most electrifying examples, including world premieres for Jaron Henrie-McCrea’s CURTAIN, Russell Friedenberg’s WIND WALKERS, Padraig Reynolds’ WORRY DOLLS and Benjamin Moody’s LAST GIRL STANDING. There are European premieres for Ben Cresciman’s SUNCHOKE, Kyle Rankin’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEB, Valentin Javier Diment’s THE ROTTEN LINK, John Fallon’s THE SHELTER, Adam Mason’s HANGMAN and Brian James O’Connell’s BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS. UK premieres score highly too with Mickey Keating’s POD, Perry Blackshear’s THEY LOOK LIKE PEOPLE, John Knautz’s GODDESS OF LOVE, Anthony DiBlasi’s MOST LIKELY TO DIE, Alberto Marini’s SUMMER CAMP, Rodney Ascher’s THE NIGHTMARE, Zak Hilditch’s THESE FINAL HOURS, Pavel Khaleev’s III, April Mullen’s FARHOPE TOWER, Jeffrey Lando’s SUSPENSION, Isaac Gabaeff’s monster mash-up THE SAND, Eduardo Schuldt’s Peruvian horror THE ENTITY, Tyler Shields’ feature film debut FINAL GIRL 14 year-old French director Nathan Ambrosioni’s HOSTILE, Takashi Miike’s OVER YOUR DEAD BODY, David Gelb’s THE LAZARUS EFFECT, Dan Berk & Robert Olsen’s BODY, Isabel Coixet’s ANOTHER ME, Chad Archibald’s BITE, Joe Chien’s ZOMBIE FIGHT CLUB, and Josh Forbes’ CONTRACTED: PHASE II. There is also a special screening for Paul Goodwin’s FUTURE SHOCK! THESTORY OF 2000AD. This selection is bound to cause much heated debate and ecstatic discussion.

If the Discovery Screen Strand has increased in popularity, so has the Retrospective selection. This year audiences will be able to discover an eclectic programme straddling grindhouse to art-house with brand new restorations of the classic HELLRAISER, the giallo masterpiece YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY, the exploitation duo MADMAN and THE MUTILATOR, the cult Hammer Horror CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER, the high camp HAWK THE SLAYER and the high-end horrors TENDERNESS OF THE WOLVES and THE REFLECTING SKIN.

Plus the Duke Mitchell Film Club is back with a rare screening of REMAKE, REMIX, RIP-OFF a crazy experience of the golden years of Turkish cinema, where demand was high, technical know-how low and copyright law non-existent! And the popular Duke @ Frightfest Film party is back too

This year’s other special events, the growing guest list and the expanded Short Film Showcase entries will be announced in the coming weeks. .

Alan Jones, Festival co-director, said today: “It is with great pride that we announce the line-up for the UK’s biggest, best and most renowned genre festival which is now a globally recognised brand. Our sixteenth year sees yet another enhancement of its core mission to bring the finest in home grown and international fear to the dark heart of London’s West End.

Embracing everything outstanding about the horror fantasy genre, whether it be from mainstream mayhem or director’s daydream to quirky independents and major talent detection, the Temple of Terror that is Film4 FrightFest returns with a vengeance to the flagship Vue Cinema in London’s Leicester Square”.

Julia Wrigley, Head of Film4 Channel, added:  ““The relationship with FrightFest is extremely important to Film4 – the channel has always been committed to bringing our audience the very best in horror, so joining forces with such a major genre event keeps us connected to the fans and filmmakers who generate all the excitement. We try to capture that in our annual FrightFest season and weekly Saturday Night Shocks strand, but it’s what the team create in a festival setting that keeps us coming back as title sponsors. This year we’re thrilled to be a part of the weekend itself thanks to a new Channel 4/Film4 short-film scheme and to be starting what we hope will be an ongoing debate with our new website feature bringing together the best horror films of the century so far, voted on by a panel of experts. Ultimately, FrightFest is always a huge inspiration whenever we think about horror at Film4.”

Festival and day pass sales will go on sale Sat 4 July at noon and will only be available online at: https://live.advancedticketing.co.uk/k?v=frightfest

Single tickets will go on sale on Sat 25 July.

A festival pass will cost £185. Day passes are: Thursday £30, Friday & Saturday £60, Sunday & Monday £50. Single tickets will be £13.25.

Dubbed “the Woodstock of Gore” by director Guillermo Del Toro, FrightFest was created in 2000 by film producer Paul McEvoy, journalist and broadcaster Alan Jones and film distributor/booker Ian Rattray. Greg Day, the festival’s long standing PR, became a joint director in 2007. From its cult roots at the Prince Charles Cinema it has grown to become one of the genre’s most vibrant, credible and recognisable brands, helping to launch the careers of directors such as Simon Rumley, Christopher Smith, Eli Roth, Neil Marshall and Simon Hunter. Apart from the annual 5-day event in London, FrightFest has an ever-growing strand at the Glasgow Film Festival, hosts a nationwide Halloween horrorthon and showcases special screenings throughout the year. It recently teamed up with Icon Films Distribution to release FrightFest curated films under the banner ‘FrightFest Presents’.

The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) has announced its programme and the choice is amazing. DIFF returns for its 36th year of cinematic celebration. From 16 to 26 July, the city will be illuminated by the wonder and diversity of global cinema.

This year's diverse line-up includes an expanded focus on African cinema with a selection of Africa's Lost Classics and a showcase of this year's FESPACO winners. Other focus areas include a cross-section of contemporary cinema from Brazil as well DIFF Beat, which celebrates a number of music-based films, and Just One Earth, which presents a selection of environmentally- and sustainability themed titles. In addition to the generous selection of feature films and cutting edge documentaries, DIFF 2015 will screen 10 packages of short films and a selection of thrilling surf films in the Wavescape Surf Film Festival.

South African Focus

While DIFF is a vital showcase for the ever-expanding African film industry, South African film remains the key focus, with 14 feature and 13 documentary films and 30 short films - most of them receiving their world premieres on Durban screens.

This year's opening night film see the African premiere of Ayanda, the second fiction feature film from South African filmmaker Sara Blecher who opened the festival in 2011 with Otelo Burning. Ayanda tells the story of single-minded 21-year-old Afro-hipster Ayanda (Fulu Mugovhani) who has a talent for taking neglected pieces of furniture and bringing them back to life.

Other films in this focus include the low-budget horror The Actor from Aiden Whytock, the politically inclined Bonnie-and-Clyde tale Impunity from Jyoti Mistry and the long awaited Necktie Youth from Sibs Shongwe-Le Mer. Other South African fiction feature films include Dis Ek, Anna, based on the famous Afrikaans novel and directed by Sara Blecher, and the dramatic thriller Lady Grey from Alain Chouquart.

South African documentaries include Blood Lions, which follows a South African conservationist and an American hunter on their journey through the lion hunting industry, Coming of Age, which follows the lives of two teenagers in Lesotho, Glory Game The Joost van der Westhuizen Story, which chronicles the famous rugby player's battle with Motor Neuron Disease, and The Shore Break which documents the attempts by a foreign mining company to mine titanium in the Eastern Cape.

African documentaries include the powerful Beats of the Antonov which portrays the musical lives of a war-torn community in Sudan, the remarkable Sembene! which documents the life and career of African master Ousmane Sembene and Paths to Freedom, which explores the genesis of Namibia's armed struggle against South Africa.

Afric's Lost Classics is a selection providing a rare opportunity for viewers to catch some of the most powerful and idiosyncratic works from the continent's rich film history. The selection comprises the previously lost masterpiece Come Back, Africa, the seminal Mapantsula from Oliver Schmitz and The Blue Eyes of Yonta by pioneering Guinea-Bissau filmmaker Flora Gomes, as well as Badou Boy and Touki Bouki, both from African master Djibril Diop Mambety.

FESPACO Stallions

In a special tribute to African cinema, DIFF 2015 features six winners from the 2015 edition of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, or FESPACO. These include amongst others Fevers, which tells the story of Benjamin, who moves in with his father and grandparents in a Paris suburb in order to avoid foster-care, The Eye of the Cyclone, a psychological drama about a young lawyer who has been appointed a case that no one else wants, and Miners Shot Down which returns to DIFF after being celebrated at FESPACO this year.

WORLD CINEMA

Following its rich tradition of world cinema, DIFF 2015 presents a diverse showcase of films from around the world. 1000 Rupee Note from India tells the story of a poor old widow named Budhi who receives a gift of several 1000 Rupee notes from a politician. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night bills itself as the first Iranian Vampire Western, while Dealer, from France, documents 24 hours in the increasingly hellish life of a small time drug dealer. Bob And The Trees tells the story of Bob, a 50-year-old logger in rural Massachusetts with a soft spot for golf and gangster rap. Jean-Jacques Annaud's visually spectacular film Wolf Totem from France and China, the animated The Prophet, White Bird in a Blizzard, the uneasy drama Strangerland set in Australia, and the drama/romance, Coming Home contribute to the richly textured programme this year.

Documentaries

This year's festival will once more play host to a sterling selection of documentaries from around the world. The American Film (Dis)Honesty - The Truth About Lies explores the complex impact dishonesty has on our lives and our societies. Democrats, from Denmark, tells the unique story of the political elite in Zimbabwe fighting the battle over the principles defining the country's possible future. Foodies, from Sweden, follows five of the world's most renowned foodies on their hunt for the most exclusive nourishment in the world, while Taxi, from banned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, takes us on a vibrant and colourful journey through the streets of Tehran. Brazilian Focus

Like South Africa, Brazil is a country defined by glaring inequality and cultural polarity. It also has a rich culture of cinema and a remarkably diverse national canon. Offering a window on to this complex and diverse country, Brazilian Vision presents a wide range of films from different regions in Brazil, providing an incisive overview of its considerable cinematic output. From the north-east state of Pernambuco comes two celebrated feature films: The History of Eternity by Camilo Cavalcanti and the moving Brazilian Dream, an opera movie depicting the Brazilian economic crisis. From the capital Brasília comes White Out, Black In, which portrays a country longing for transformation, while The Ballad of Poor Jean deals with the huge social divide between rich and poor in the country.

Semaine de la Critique in South Africa

DIFF, with the support of the French Institute of South Africa and Urucu Media, presents a traveling programme of La Semaine de la Critique (Critic's Week) of Cannes Film Festival which will launch in Durban before travelling to Cape Town and Johannesburg. Featured films include amongst others Hope, a take on migration from Africa to Europe, You and the Night, an erotic-existential-queer comedy from Yann Gonzalez.  As well as these screenings, La Semaine de la Critique in South Africa features a master class with visiting filmmaker Boris Lojkine in Durban and filmmaker round tables in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

DIFF BEAT

With DIFF Beat, the festival pays tribute to musical freethinkers and rule-breakers. Hip hop is explored in Shake the Dust. Tango Negro: The African Roots of Tango intersperses dance and musical performances with interviews with tango-lovers and experts, while Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck blends Cobain's personal archive with touching interviews with his family. Imagine Waking up Tomorrow and All Music Has Disappeared comes from cult musician/art terrorist Bill Drummond, and When Voices Meet tells the story of therapist Sharon Katz's 500-voice multiracial choir.

Just One Earth

Just One Earth offers a selection of films that promote sustainable living and raise awareness about the ecological threats we are facing. All the Time in the World tells the story of Canadian filmmaker Suzanne Crocker and her family who decide to take time out from their lives and relocate to the wilds. In Energised filmmaker Hubert Canaval explores how profit-driven efforts ensure that both alternative energy solutions and the threats to our existence posed by today's main sources of energy remain largely unknown to the public. In Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story, filmmaker Grant Baldwin and producer/writer Jen Rustemeyer explore why nearly 50% of the food produced in Canada ends up in the trash. Finally, the extraordinary Virunga tells of a group of park-rangers in the Democratic Republic of Congo who have devoted their lives to saving the gorillas in Virunga National Park.

Wavescape Surf Film Festival

The 10th Wavescape Surf Festival at DIFF celebrates a decade of films and events around ocean sustainability and beach culture. From Sunday 19 to Saturday 25 July, Wavescape will showcase the latest surf films from around the world.

European Contents in Digital Era. Towards a modernised copyright framework. What is at stake?

Sunday, July 5, 2015, from 4.30 pm to 6.00 pm

Blue Lounge, Lázně III

Nearly half of Europeans fail to use streaming services from their own country while on holiday abroad because of geo-blocking. Both technology and how society makes use of it have evolved significantly since the existing legislation on copyright was drafted. It affects not only creators and consumers but also the whole value chain of the audio-visual industry. New attempts to modernize copyright rules on EU level are now on the table. What is at stake of this reform? Is it ambitious enough and how it affects the distribution models?

Speakers: Mr. Pavel Svoboda, Chair of the Committee on Legislative Affairs, European Parliament; Mr. Bogdan Wenta, Culture and Education, European Parliament; Mr. Petr Ostrouchov, expert on copyright law, and other experts. Moderated by Ms. Doris Pack, LUX Prize coordinator, former Chairwoman of the Committee on Culture and Education, European Parliament.

Debate organized by the LUX Film Prize of the European Parliament and Creative Europe Desk Czech Republic-MEDIA, in partnership with KVIFF and Europa Distribution.

A Conversation with Azize Tan, Director of Istanbul Film Festival

Film festivals, widely recognized all over the world as realms of freedom of artistic expression, are increasingly on the threat of political pressures. Examples of interference have multiplied recently, with the executive director of Busan forced to step down last October or, at the very moment, the Minister of Culture threatening to reconsider public funding for the Jerusalem Film Festival. Azize Tan will come back to the events that shook the Istanbul Film Festival last April, when Turkish filmmakers pulled out their films over censorship row.

What Next? Will Studies Lead the Way for Czech Cinema?

Friday, July 10, 2015, from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm

Blue Lounge, Lázně III

Two extensive studies were published this year. The first, carried out by APA, provides an insight into the habits of viewers and their perception of Czech film production. The second study, conducted by SFK, focuses on film development.

The Ministry of Culture has drafted an amendment to the Media and Audiovisual Services Act that will provide a new source of funding for SFK from the state budget. Where is funding needed most? How can it help Czech cinematography to be more attractive to the viewers and successful at international festivals? Is lack of funding the only problem of local film production? Do the ambitions of local filmmakers exceed their skills? Or is Czech film in need of a strategy that would keep moviegoers interested in this digital age.

The talk is in Czech only.

TorinoFilmLab: Shall It Be Forbidden to Forbid?

Friday, July 10, 2015, from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm

Blue Lounge, Lázně III

A Talk with Peter Kerekes, Documentary Filmmaker, around his film project Censors

Thought-provoking and irreverent Slovak filmmaker Peter Kerekes (A Cooking HistoryVelvet Terrorists) is embarking on a new journey exploring the important daily decisions that small people part of big systems have to take. Kerekes’s attention will be targeted at censors, the very last “manual workers” in an era of security softwares. Censors intends to be a very “un-revolutionary” film, insisting on the importance of setting borders and social value of censorship. Yet, is it even possible to make an apolitical film about censorship? Hopefully, the question will stir vivid debates in the audience.

The jubilee anniversary of the festival has plenty of surprises coming

$

The 50th Karlovy Vary IFF will take place between July 3 and 11, 2015. The jubilee anniversary of the festival will be a celebration of cinematography open to the general public.

The festival tradition stretches all the way back to 1946 when the first, non-competitive showcase of films was held in Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně. The festival’s modern history began with the arrival of a team of organisers centred around Karlovy Vary IFF president Jiří Bartoška and artistic director Eva Zaoralová. More than two decades of successful development have shown that the intention of the state at the time to cancel the Karlovy Vary festival would have been short sighted. The festival earned itself a place among the elite international film festivals of the highest category, and most importantly it found a niche of its own. The festival is famous for its inimitable atmosphere, its openness to film lovers and its relaxed environment in which film stars and regular viewers can meet in one room.

It is for these reasons that the opening of the 50th Karlovy Vary IFF has been conceived as a celebration of film and of the film fans who have been coming to the festival for the last 22 years and who have made it exceptional.

The ceremonial commencement of the Karlovy Vary IFF on July 3, 2015, will have a special programme. Following the opening ceremony and the screening of the opening film there will be a big festival party in the area around the Thermal Hotel and in the city streets. Every visitor, guest and viewer can attend the celebration. The “film night” events are organised in cooperation with the partners of the KVIFF.

A simple symbol – a paper bowtie or red make-up – will make everyone who wants to take part in the celebrations a VIP guest. Because in Karlovy Vary everyone can be a star!

Lucie concert

Following the opening film all visitors are invited to a special mega-concert in front of the Thermal Hotel at which the legendary Czech rock band LUCIE will hold an entirely unique performance as a gift for the jubilee. The concert is organised in cooperation with the general partner, ČEZ Group, as a variation on the traditional Energy Fest. This commencement programme will also include an audio-visual show by the well-known performer Vladimír 518.

Film Spa at Mlýnská kolonáda

In cooperation with the main partner of the KVIFF, the company RWE, and the main media partner, Czech Television, a feature length documentary film called Film Spa has been made by director Miroslav Janek to map the previous years of the Karlovy Vary festival.

The public will be able to see the documentary on July 3 at a special night-time, open-air screening at Mlýnská kolonáda.

The Karlovy Vary Festival Endowment Fund

The festival has established The Karlovy Vary Festival Endowment Fund, the goal of which is to support master's degree students in the directing programme at FAMU and help implement their projects. The festival will provide a scholarship for selected FAMU students who already have an approved plan for their graduation film.

MEL GIBSON TO FILM NEW KVIFF TRAILER

The international film festival continues in its tradition of trailers starring the laureates of its highest award – The Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.

Last year’s recipient of this award, actor, director and producer Mel Gibson has agreed to film the trailer for the 50th anniversary. The trailer will be shot in Los Angeles in early May and will be written and directed by Martin Krejčí, who has collaborated with Ivan Zachariáš since the beginning of the festival trailers project. Martin Krejčí directed the trailers featuring Jiří Menzel and Helen Mirren.

Human Rights Watch Film Festival New York 2015

$

Starting with the 1978 establishment of the Helsinki Watch focusing on compliance with the Helsinki accords and human rights violations and the creation of watch committees for the Americas and other regions in the eighties, the human rights watch has emerged as the largest global organization tracking and revealing human rights violations.  Its work is distinguished  by  fact  based  non-partisan rigorous research, effective media use  and has involved  collaboration in setting up the International Criminal Court,  identifying neglected human rights topics and investigating human rights abuses in closed society  such as Saudi Arabia. Human Rights Watch was instrumental  in passing of the 2008 treaty   outlawing  cluster  munitions   for which it shared  the 1997 Nobel Price.  Applying up to date electronic research methods with on-the-ground fact finding Human Rights Watch has been able to inform public opinion and publicize crucial issues faced by our societies. They include ethnic cleansing, minority and women rights, legal challenges of counter terrorism actions, and political oppression, to name but a few.

Among its most important tools in reaching a larger public is the annual Human Rights Watch Film festival held this year in its 26th edition from June 11-26.   Co-presented with the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the IFC Center it featured 16 documentaries and special programs such as a seminar on international crisis. Three major themes defined the program: Art Versus Oppression, Change makers, and Justice and Peace. According to Human Rights Watch the films “celebrate the power of individuals and communities to effect change”. Like other established film festival Human Rights Watch is actively involved in film making because it sponsors investigative documentary films in specific problem areas. Its crisis seminar featured The Unravelling by Marcus Bleasdale. This 2015 production provided the first coverage of the evolving humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic and received the Robert Capa Gold Medal by the Associated Press. Such film sponsorship is accompanied by the effective pre- or post-festival placement in political settings and media campaigns naming and shaming the offenders. Suffice to say the event is considered to be among the best film festivals New York offers, though as noted by Stephen Holder in the New York Times its “commercial impact is miniscule”,

Shown at the 2014 New York Film Festival The Look of Silence by Joshua Oppenheimer (Denmark/Indonesia/Norway/Finland/UK, 2014) follows his acclaimed 2013 film The Act of Killing which investigated and reenacted with some of the perpetrators the 1965 murder of alleged communists and others in Indonesia when more than a million individuals were executed. None of the killers and politicians supporting the massacres was ever brought to justice. In The Look of Silence a family of survivors finds out how their son, Ramli, was murdered.   The brother of the victim, Adi, an itinerant eye doctor tracks down the killer and tries to break the code of silence. The killers show no remorse and offer matter of fact detailed descriptions of the killing. They take the film maker to the spot next to Snake River where they killed Ramli and also claimed to have participated in the murder of more than 10,000 other victims. No excuses are articulated but the rationalization is offered that the murder was necessary to maintain order. Reenacting the killing and castration of his brother, one culprit recalls being proud to walk into a restaurant with a severed head. Surrounded by this persistence of silence about the mass killing, the families of victims still live in fear of reprisals and of new murders. Many of those responsible for the killings now have positions in all levels of government as if nothing has happened.

OF MEN AND WAR, Laurent Becue-Renard, 2014 France/Switzerland

In this compelling documentary Becue-Renard provides a human face to the suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As distinct from other superb productions on that problematic issue like HBO’s War Torn we learn through numerous statements by soldiers beset by the condition what happened to them during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and how they have tried to survive the aftermath. There is no footage from the war. Comments by a therapist running group sessions with the soldiers and affected family members who try to keep them grounded are kept to a minimum. Recollections from killing the enemy and civilians, witnessing close up the death of close friends and fellow soldiers, even of murder, permits us to better understand. But these experiences are frozen in the soldiers’ memories.  For the viewer it is difficult to grasp how overcoming the horror is possible. Many soldiers considered killing themselves and a many combatants suffering from PTSD actually did so during the conflict and afterwards.  The camera recorded for nine months their interactions and the documentary becomes a record of the transformatory power of the war experience, an experience shared by less than 1 percent of the population, and not readily accessible to most.  Their actions had a lasting impact on the moral fiber of these war torn soldiers and their sense of self has become precarious.

The Wanted 18, Amer Shomali, Paul Cowan, Canada/Palestine/France

Reflection is not only prompted by dark presentations of human rights violation. The audience gets insights into the mindsets of Palestinian villagers and the occupying military powers of Israel through this award winning documentary. Its seemingly absurd story is provided through interviews, reenactments, archival footage, and the stoop motion animation used to present 18 talking cows. During the first intifada the villagers of Beit Sahour decide to acquire the cows to become self-sufficient and gain a modicum of control over their fate, thus engage in an act of civil disobedience. The Israeli response is fast.  Self-governance, even if it is just restricted to the milk supply, is declared a security risk, aggravated by the villagers’ refusal to pay taxes. For a week the Israeli army tries to catch and kill the cows hidden by the villagers. Eventually the villagers give up their struggle feeling their civil-disobedience struggle betrayed by the Oslo accord signed by Jasser Arafat.

Cartel Land, Matthew Heineman, USA/Mexico, 2015

This documentary offers intriguing portraits of self-defense movements on both sides of the Mexican border. The activists   claim to be abandoned, by their governments and have no expectation that there will be an improvement of the conditions they are facing. On Mexican side the  autodefensas take arms against the violent  Knights Templars drug cartel, On the American side  in the Cocaine  Valley border strip at the Arizona Border  Recon,  a para military  group is  led by a former  U.S. Veteran  and is supported by local farmers. Its mission is to defend the American land and the border region against an invasion of Mexican drug traffickers and immigrants. Both groups have no faith in their governments; the Mexican vigilantes   believe that government agencies including the police and the military are corrupted by the pervasive power of the cartels. Some known Templars apparently form part of the civilian defense force used against the vigilantes. Members of the US vigilante group note as do their Mexican counter part a complete breakdown of the law and order and the failure of the institutions that are supposed to protect the citizens. For the American vigilantes the government is naïve and incompetent not willing to face the threat of Mexican cartels. Both groups define their own justice which may be as brutal as what they are fighting.

3 ½ Minutes, Ten bullets, Marc Silver, US, 2015

As recent events in the United States have demonstrated racial issues pervade the criminal justice and political system with latent or overt race attitudes influence actions and decisions. In Marc Silver’s documentary such miscarriage of justice is elucidated.  In the parking lot of a gas station a white middle-aged man fires into the d car of four unarmed black teenagers objecting to the loud playing of rap music, killing a 17 year old boy.   He argues in the first trial that after a verbal exchange he was threatened by one teenager who held a weapon in his hand and invokes self-defense under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law. He is acquitted.  During the second trial testimony by his female companion who was sitting next to him in the car revealed that he had lied in court and he was convicted of murder. The readiness to engage in violent action cannot be disconnected from his perception that black men are criminals constituting an ever president threat.

Stanley Nelson’s The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, US, 2015 provides a superbly researched and structured documentation of the Black Panther party from the late sixties on. In an extraordinary combination of archival material, witness accounts by supporters as well as opponents and testimonies of the founders of the party its rise and perceived threat to the existing political system is demonstrated. .The violent methods of the police and governmental agencies to contain and exterminate the movement are illustrated including the trials of Bobby Seal and other prime members of the movement. Contrary to public perception the party was oriented to the community providing child care, health and food services not otherwise available. Women constituted the majority of kits rank and file. Though a revolutionary ethos was embraced by the movement with the stress on radical change and self-empowerment, and armed members patrolled the streets to monitor the police, actual violence by members of the party against the established powers was rather limited. To the contrary’ for Edgar Hoover the Black Panther party constituted the greatest threat to the security of the United States and he initiated through the FBI’s cointelpro initiatives many legal and illegal actions, to curtail the power of the party and to destroy it. They included surveillance, police harassment, infiltration of the party, and assassinations to name but a few.

In its 2015 edition the Human Rights Watch Film Festival provided again persuasive documentations of global human rights violations. The reaction to the violation is shown conveying the important message that individuals and communities can take action.

Every conceivable film technique and technology is represented in an extraordinary selection of films, according to Spike from Wavescape, co-director of the Wavescape festival. “We have some excellent documentaries, including the hair-raising story of the Signal Hill Speed Run in California that started downhill skateboard racing.”

Wavescape 2015 boasts 12 short films and 11 medium or feature length movies that reflect a unique diversity. A unique trilogy of poetic shorts form a beautiful rendition of surfing in the UK: Sea Fever - and Irish film set to a John Masefield poem and gritty black and white footage; Edges of Sanity - a uniquely powerful piece narrated by Charles Dance who plays Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones; and Chasing Rumours - moving from the clamour of a football match at Newcastle United to the nearby Tyne River where storm waves pound grimy shores.

Included are films from the most remote wildernesses of Alaska (Arctic Swell) and the Arctic Circle (The Cradle of Storms). But from these frozen wastelands and frigid waves we sweep to the translucent tropical waters and reefs of Indonesia in the Mentawai Drone Movie, a short shot entirely by aerial drone.

“Don’t miss the languidly beautiful pace of Bella Vita that takes us to Tuscany as an Italian surfer and activist retraces his ancient roots, or the hard-hitting feminist film Flux: Redefining Women's Surfing that ask serious questions of the surf industry.”

"One of my favourite shorts is Narcose, an artistically rendered account of world apnea free diving champion Guillaume Néry's hallucinations caused by 'raptures of the deep' during one of his dives," says Spike.

There are films about skateboarding in the urban precincts of Cape Town, and keeping within themes of sustainability, two South African shorts about wooden surfboard craftsman. From the epic surfing and slo-mo definition of worldclass surfing in Attractive Distractions, we move to Always on the Road, a beautifully shot film that traces the old surf routes of Europe along the Basque countryside, as well as France and Portugal.

There are obligatory soul surfing movies (I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, Missing, Rail to Rail and Se7en Signs) to a heady mix of high action surfing that can be found in Missing, Attractive Distractions, Strange Rumblings in Shangri La and Pipeline and Kelly Slater.

And with any selection of surf films, there is the whacky wildcard: Expencive Porno Movie (sic) spoofs the "surf porn” genre, of endless shots of waves and wave-riding, with a cheesy 1960's Austin Powers theme. The widest collection yet hails from locations such as Namibia, Cape Town, Hawaii, California, Indonesia, Portugal, Spain, Alaska, Patagonia, and Australia.

The free outdoor screening at the Bay of Plenty takes place Sunday 19 July. Ster Kinekor Musgrave screenings are from from Monday, 20 July to Saturday, 25 July.

THE ARDENNES BY ROBIN PRONT TO OPEN THE 42ND FILM FEST GENT

The 42nd edition of Film Fest Gent will open on Tuesday October 13th with Robin Pront’s debut film ‘The Ardennes’ starring Kevin Janssens, Jeroen Perceval and Veerle Baetens.

Synopsis: A brutal home jacking goes hopelessly wrong. Dave, one of the two robbers, manages to run off, leaving his brother Kenneth behind. Four years later Kenneth is released from prison but a lot has changed over time. Dave has his life back on track and is trying to help Kenneth wherever possible, but is witnessing how his highly-strung brother tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Sylvie.

Next to Veerle Baetens (‘Broken Circle Breakdown’), Kevin Janssens (‘Missing Persons Unit’) and co-writer Jeroen Perceval (‘Bullhead’), the supporting actors are Jan Bijvoet (‘Borgman), Sam Louwyck (‘The Wonders’), Viviane De Muynck (‘Racing Hearts’) and Peter Van den Begin (‘Kebab Royal’).

Director Robin Pront: "As a young filmmaker I couldn’t imagine a better start for my first feature film. To open Film Fest Gent is the greatest honour you can achieve with your film in Belgium. Needless to say I’m very pleased with this opportunity. Another perk is that after several unsuccessful attempts, I will now finally get to attend the opening night of the film festival ;-) !"

Artistic director of Film Fest Gent, Patrick Duynslaegher on choosing ‘The Ardennes’ as the opening film: “We are delighted to open the 42nd edition of Film Fest Gent with ‘The Ardennes’. It’s a film festival’s duty to spot and showcase new talent. Which is certainly the case with Robin Pront, whose first feature film is a hole in one. It’s an amazing and, especially for Flanders, a rather unique mix of genre and arthouse cinema. This dark thriller is an uncut Flemish noir, not suitable for viewers who can’t take a little bloodshed, but highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a purebred filmmaker at work and enjoy the remarkable performances by Veerle Baetens, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval."

‘The Ardennes’ was produced by Bart Van Langendonck for Savage Film, co-produced by Eyeworks and PRPL/Bastide Films in the Netherlands and will be distributed in Belgium by Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD). The film will be released nationally on October 14th 2015.

The 42nd Film Fest Gent runs from 13 to 24 October at Kinepolis Ghent, Studio Skoop, Sphinx, Vooruit, KASKcinema, Music Centre Bijloke and Kuipke.

RACING ARAB CHICKS AND BOUNDARY BREAKERS HIT ARAB FILM FESTIVAL

The 12th annual Arab Film Festival Australia returns in 2015 boasting a melting pot of films from around the Arab world. The Festival will open in Sydney on Thursday 13 -16 August, Melbourne on Friday 21 - 23 August, and Canberra on Friday 28 - 30 August and will present six feature films and four short films.

From a small Lebanese coastal village, to the racetracks of Palestine, to the iconic backdrop of the Arabian dessert, the Festival gives audiences the best of contemporary Arab films. Whilst conflict and instability continue to be the dominant representation of the Arab world, the filmmakers are uncovering rich and rare stories and capturing them in unique ways.

“Arab filmmakers are reflecting exciting and sometimes volatile times, and through cinema they are making powerful statements, challenging stereotypes, and creating conversations about the future they dream for” says Festival Co-Director, Mouna Zaylah. We’re proud to showcase the diversity of the region with films from Jordan, Iraq, UAE, Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon.

Festival Co-DirectorFadia Abboud is particularly looking forward to audience reactions to this year’s line-up. “In 2015 the Festival explores taboos from small towns to big cities: Arab chicks’ car racing in the West Bank; Arab boys taking a road-trip partying across borders and check-points. There’s a theme of pushing boundaries both physically and ideologically”.

Simon Boswell at Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival 2015

With much joy we announce the arrival of film score composer Simon Boswell to this year's Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival where we will together celebrate 30 years of his work in cinema. The festival starts on Tuesday, July 14th and will last until Satrurday, July 18th.

Simon Boswell (born in London in 1956) has left an indelible mark on horror genre through numerous memorable and now-classical scores from the 1980s and 1990s in which he combined electronic elements with orchestral instruments.

He was an accomplished musician by the time he started his film career in 1985, when several of his themes were used in Dario Argento's Phenomena. This led to his first composer credit, for Argento-produced Demons 2 (1986) directed by Lamberto Bava; he did several more scores for Bava Jr. and other Italian horror directors, most notably for Michele Soavi's debut Stage Fright (1987).
His wonderful scores added grandeur and beauty to visionary works of several auteurs known for their unique style, like Alejandro Jodorowsky (Santa Sangre, 1989), Clive Barker (Lord Of Illusions, 1995), Álex de la Iglesia (Perdita Durango, 1997) and Juraj Jakubisko (Bathory: Countess of Blood, 2008).
A special part of Boswell's career is linked with the director Richard Stanley: his haunting, melodic tunes have become inextricable from this director's films Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992), but they also add the mystical mood to all of Stanley's documentaries, too.
This composer is not devoted only to horror and fantastique: he contributed remarkable scores for Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave, and also for Hackers, Photographing Fairies, A Midsummer Night's Dream and dozens of others.

In 2015 Simon Boswell celebrates 30 years of his work in cinema: a perfect timing to reunite him with his long-time inspirator, Richard Stanley, and greet them both on Grossmann! Besides a special retrospective, there will also be a master class, moderated by Serbian writer and critic Dejan Ognjanović who has also contributed an in-depth article on Boswell for our website and program booklet which was used in this article.
